Procol Harum’s debut single, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” hit the UK charts on 8 June, 1967, staying at Number 1 for six weeks. Characterising the 1967 Summer of Love, ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ is one of less than thirty singles to have sold over ten million copies worldwide.

Procol Harum were a British rock band formed in 1967. The original band members were lead singer and pianist Gary Brooker, songwriter Keith Reid, Hammond organist Matthew Fisher, guitarist Ray Royer and bassist David Knights.
Procol Harum’s debut single ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’, based on Bach’s ‘Air on a G-String’ topped the UK charts for six weeks in 1967, and reached number 5 on the Billboard pop chart in the United States. The record became one of the anthems of the 1967 ‘Summer of Love’ and is one of less than 30 singles to have sold over ten million copies.
